Shaver 3. Shape

Fig. 1. Three different shape prototypes for the “shaver”.

The goal of this experiment was to assess the shape and the fit of the “shaving device” in the hand. The touch with the skin should be pleasant and interesting. Four different shapes were explored using modelling clay. Shaving movements were made with the shapes to feel how the head touched the skin and the type of movements it allowed.

Ample contact with the skin [a] in combination with precision [b] was pleasant and evoked attention. Freedom of movement as well as flexibility in ways to hold the shaver [c1] made its use more interesting and engaging. The final prototype combines these four characteristics [c1]. From this prototype, a foam-board model was made to prototype the laser cutting layers. A hollow holds the motor. The shaver can be turned on and off and an external switch (Fig. 2.).

Both the fleece and velvet heads have relaxing and stimulating effects. It would be interesting to include them both in the performance.
